One very stressful time, all my kids had colics at the same time…while I was away. We don’t get sick often, but it was awful and I wasn’t on hand to use all of ours Natural remedies.

Thankfully, that was the first and last stomach ache they all had at once. However, at least one child sometimes gets a runny nose or cough during the winter. Or I’ll dust my closet and give myself a cough/congestion/nasal drip for a few days.

In those cases, I like to spray this herbal decoction on my hands. Sore throat, cough or congestion is great.

Herbal throat spray ingredients

This herbal tea is basically a strong herbal tea mixed with raw honey. The herb offers both quick relief and lasting benefits to beat pain. You can use many different immunity and sore throat herbs, but I choose the following.

  • Echinacea root – Natural antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory. Soothes sore throats and coughs and supports the immune system. It helps soothe sore throats and is great for sore throats or tonsillitis as a tea or throat spray.
  • Ginger – It warms up and promotes blood circulation. Antibacterial and thin mucus and helps to remove it from the body. It helps relieve swelling, pain and muscle stiffness. In addition, ginger stimulates white blood cells, prevents viruses from entering cells and destroys viruses.
  • Marshmallow root – A nourishing herb that soothes and soothes burned, dry or damaged tissue. It reduces inflammation, supports white blood cells, and is protective.
  • Elderberry – It is commonly used for sore throat and helps reduce inflammation in the mouth and throat. It also supports better drainage, less nasal congestion, and is an expectorant. It is especially good for coughs and viral infections.
  • Tim – Not just for Italian food! Thyme herb is excellent for breaking up and expelling congestion and mucus stuck in the lungs. It is anti-bacterial, anti-infective, and helps with better breathing.
  • Peppermint – It adds a refreshing taste and is warming and stimulating when used internally. It is antimicrobial and helps fight various viral, bacterial and fungal diseases.
  • If we see – Cayenne is warming, stimulating and increases circulation to promote healing. It is traditionally used for sore throats, coughs and disease prevention. It adds a spicy kick though, so reduce or skip if desired.

You don’t need every herb on this list to make an herbal throat spray. If you don’t have some on hand, use more than you do. I will do it Herbal tincture Seasoned with herbs and then mixed with raw honey for a strong spray. If made in this way, herbal teas will last for months in the refrigerator.

Pre-made herbal tea

Don’t want to work or don’t have the plants you need? I also like this premade one Herbal teas It includes echinacea and propolis. This Propolis sore throat It is also a family favorite.

Herbal throat tincture

To make a tincture, I combine 1 tablespoon each of these dried herbs: Echinacea, Ginger, Marshmallow Root, Elderberry, Thyme and Mint and 1 teaspoon of dried cayenne pepper (optional) in a pint-sized mason jar.

Fill the rest of the jar with a strong food-grade liquor such as rum or vodka (it should be at least 80-proof alcohol). Wear the air mask for at least two weeks or up to eight weeks (the longer it sits, the stronger it will be). Store in a cool dark place. I do this once a year and have enough to last at least a year.

Here is my full tutorial Making herbal tinctures If herbal remedies are new.

  • Add herbs to a pint-sized mason jar.

  • Pour alcohol over plants, leaving ½ inch headspace.

  • Close the lid tightly and leave the tincture for 2-4 weeks, shaking occasionally.

  • After the canning is complete, strain the herbs and keep the liquid.

  • For every 6 tablespoons of tincture, add 2 tablespoons of raw honey.

  • Shake well to combine and refrigerate for up to 6 months.

  • I pour some into a spray bottle for easy use as needed.

You don’t have to use all the herbs in the list. If you want/need to leave out some plants, replace them with others.

Two hours herbal throat spray Tincture

If you want to use the whole herbal mixture and don’t have weeks to sit waiting for the tincture, you can make a two-hour version with this method:

  1. Mix 1 teaspoon (2 tablespoons total) of all herbs in a one liter glass jar.
  2. Pour in enough boiling water to just cover the plants.
  3. Leave for 20 minutes until the water cools down.
  4. Strain the herbs and mix with 80-proof or higher drinks. I use rum or vodka.
  5. For every 3 parts of herbal liquid, add 1 part of honey.

This version should keep in the fridge for a few weeks.

More throat spray variations

If you prefer not to make tincture with alcohol, you can make glycerite with vegetable glycerin instead. Glycerols are not very strong and generally do not extract herbs and alcohol. It will still be useful and you only need to use a little more of the spray on the throat.

You can also prepare a strong herbal tea and mix it with honey. This does not last long and should be used within a week.

Do you have a sore throat or cough? What medications do you use?
