Ange Postecoglou has admitted that injury-hit Tottenham will be “playing with fire” if they fail to complete any further deals in the final 10 days of the January transfer window.
Spurs were without 14 players for Thursday’s 3-2 Europa League win against Hoffenheim due to injury and fitness issues.
That number will drop slightly for Sunday’s visit to Leicester, but Tottenham will be without Guglielmo Vicario, Desini Udogi, Wilson Odobert, Timo Werner, Brennan Johnson and Dominic Solanke for the foreseeable future, with Cristian Romero and Miki van de Ven eyeing a return. Carabao Cup semi-final second leg against Liverpool on February 6 live Sky Sports.
Postecoglou has struggled with a limited squad over the past two months and has kept Spurs in contention for three cup competitions, but the club have dropped to 15th in the Premier League.
With Yves Bissuma, Johnson and Solanke injured over the past week, the 59-year-old admitted that reinforcements are needed, although he stressed that technical director Johan Lang is aware of the situation. goalkeeper Antonin Kinski the only arrival this month.
To the question whether there is money to spend, Postecoglou answered:
“My discussions with Johan and the club have been about trying to get some help for the players and I’ll let them do their job.
“I still have to manage this team and prepare them. I’m not there to find opportunities for the club. I don’t have time to do that.
“I’m in daily contact with Johan in particular and he’s trying everything he can to get us the help we need.
“I don’t think I’m saying anything other than the obvious, and for me to come on here and say anything else would be disingenuous, this playing group needs help, there’s no doubt about that.
“We’re kind of playing with fire by not bringing anyone in, but the flip side of that is the club is trying to turn things around.”
“Ajax” striker Brobby is not a target of “Spurs”.
The latest from Sky Sports News’ Michael Bridge speaking on the Transfer Show;
Spurs want a striker and that is the main goal.
Spurs need a striker with Dominic Solanke out for a while and Richarlison just back.
“There have been talks about Spurs entering the race Ajax forward Brian Brobby, but I understand it is not.
“They are strikers, but I understand that Broby is not that much of a striker.”
Anj. We are in a much better place to succeed
Spurs received a timely boost on Wednesday as vice-captain Romero returned to training, but Postecoglou preached patience with the World Cup winner.
Postecoglou has revealed the plan for first-choice centre-backs Romero and Van de Ven to be ready for next month’s Carabao Cup clash with Liverpool, followed by an FA Cup tie at Aston Villa three days later.
“Of the long-term prospects, they’re the only two, Mickey and Romero, who have a chance that week, but we still have like 12 days or something,” Postecoglou muses.
“Part of that process is to see how they handle training over the next week or so. Both are slated to be available around that time.”
Spurs’ injury crisis has led to Postecoglou questioning his methods and the level of intensity in training, but he insists the club is in a better place overall than when he took charge in the summer of 2023.
He added: “I think the squad we’ve got now, they’re an exciting team and when they’re all fit I think the club will win not just this year but for many years to come.
“We have some outstanding people who have come to the club in all areas, in all aspects, who I think will contribute to the future success of this club. I strongly believe in that.
“Now the only evidence that a lot of people want to look at is where we are now in terms of our performances, especially in the league.
“But from my perspective, as someone who came into a club that wanted change and demanded change, I have no doubt that we are in a much better place for what the club needs to be successful.”
