Major winter storm brewing in the Northeast

More than 70 million people are under weather warnings from Tennessee to Maine as a major winter storm is expected to bring snow and ice into Sunday morning.

Winter storm warnings are in effect for 15 states, affecting the cities of Philadelphia, Boston, Hartford, Albany and Providence.

Additionally, a winter weather advisory is in effect for many major cities, including Baltimore, New York and Washington, DC.

People participate in a snowball fight in Washington, D.C., on Jan. 6, 2025, as the U.S. flag flies at half-staff at the base of the Washington Monument in memory of former President Jimmy Carter, who died at the age of 100.

Meanwhile, an Arctic blast is moving south across much of the country over the next few days. Half of America’s population — 165 million Americans in 36 states — is under a cold weather alert from the Northwest to the Southeast.

Wind chills will drop below zero by Monday in cities like Chicago, Minneapolis and Pittsburgh.

Also in Washington, wind chills could be near zero on Monday and Tuesday.

Citing weather-related reasons, the Trump administration has moved the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump to the Capitol Rotunda in a process not implemented since the start of Ronald Reagan’s second term in 1985.

Washington, DC has been near the freezing line all Sunday and hasn’t seen much snow so far. An inch or two of snow is likely Sunday afternoon before the storm moves out of the area around 8 p.m.

This cold weather is expected to reach the Gulf Coast on Tuesday, with wind chills dropping below 20 degrees south of Houston.

Parts of North Dakota and northern Minnesota, including Fargo, have been warned for wind chills of 55 degrees below zero. This can cause frostbite on the skin in as little as 10 minutes.

Other cities, like Chicago, will be in the -20s, Denver in the -10s, NYC will feel below zero, and Houston and the Gulf Coast in the 10s.

This weather map shows the potential for snow Sunday through Monday.

Snow-covered roads and poor visibility could make for tough travel as storms hit the Northeast, especially Sunday afternoon.

After the sun goes down, the likelihood of a slippery trip increases, especially in heavy snowpack.

By late Sunday, most of the snow will be over, but there may be some slick spots on roads into Monday morning.

Storm forecast for Sunday at 7pm EST.

ABC News

Snowfall of 4 to 8 inches is expected from the central Appalachians across New England, with parts of inland New England possibly getting a foot of snow.

New York City can expect 3 to 6 inches of snow, but there could be a big difference in snowfall totals in the NYC area due to mixing with snow Sunday afternoon. It could be the city’s heaviest single-day snowfall since January 2022.

Philadelphia expects 4 to 6 inches of snow around 9 p.m. Sunday.

Once the snow is gone, cold weather is expected to return on Monday and remain in affected areas for much of next week.
