Genetically engineered male fruit flies can transmit poison to females when they mate

Disease-spreading and crop-damaging insects could be controlled by injecting spider and sea anemone venom into their reproductive systems and killing the females that mate with them.

Samuel beach and Maciej Maselko At Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia, they have developed what they call the “toxic male technique”, where insects are genetically engineered to express venom proteins from other species in the glands of their reproductive system.

They tried seven different tests…
