Dry January, the challenge to go without alcohol for a month, is becoming more popular than ever like millions sign up Alcohol Change, the charity behind the campaign, hopes people will rethink their relationship with drink and continue to reduce their consumption beyond this month.

But while Dry January has been around for more than a decade, there has been little independence assessment of its effectiveness. For example, we don’t know what it happens when people reach the end…
