Ruben Amorim has confirmed that Manchester United will exercise the one-year option to extend Harry Maguire’s contract.
Maguire’s contract expires in the summer, but Ruben Amorim has confirmed that the former club captain will stay beyond the end of this season, while adding that Amad Diallo is “close” to signing a new deal at the club.
“Amad is close,” Amorim said live ahead of Manchester United’s trip to Liverpool. Sky Sports on Sunday.
“Harry, we will run our version. I spoke to him this morning and said that he needs to improve his game on the pitch. And also he needs to improve as a leader.
“We all know the situation he’s been in here, but we need him a lot right now, so we’ll be running the luckily for Harry option.”
Maguire lost his United captaincy and fell under former manager Erik ten Heg, who looked set to leave the club, but has found new life under Amorim, who prefers to play with three centre-backs.
Although Maguire did not take the armband for Monday’s 2-0 home defeat to Newcastle, despite the absence of suspended captain Bruno Fernandes, Amorim said his leadership qualities were important to the club.
“There are moments in a football player’s career that are different,” added Amorim.
“I think he’s handled his adversity very well and when you look at our team, we’re starving for leads on the pitch.
“He’s a leader, he’s got to improve that part and he’s got to improve our game and we’re happy to continue with him.”
Since moving to United from Leicester City in 2019, Maguire has made 222 appearances and scored 12 goals.
The centre-back has won two major titles during that time: the 2023 Carabao Cup and last season’s FA Cup.
