After our joyous enjoyment comes the inevitable season of good intentions. When we make New Year’s resolutions, we often set ourselves ambitious goals: running a half marathon, learning a language, or writing a novel. One reason these resolutions often fail is that our perspective is too broad: we think about the prize at the end of the journey, without considering the small steps we need to take to get there. Then we feel defeated and disappointed because we don’t get the progress we want.

Maybe we should all try to apply the Japanese concept…
