Jason Gillespie has resigned as Pakistan’s Test head coach and Aqib Javed has been appointed as his interim replacement, the Pakistan Cricket Board has confirmed.
Akib’s first assignment with the Red Ball team will be the upcoming two-Test tour to South Africa, starting with the Boxing Day Test in Centurion from December 26.
Gillespie was hired by the PCB alongside Gary Kirsten as white-ball coach earlier this year, with Kirsten stepping down in October and Aqib also taking over on an interim basis last month.
Gillespie, who has also held head coaching posts in county cricket at Yorkshire (2012-2016) and Sussex (2018-2020), led Pakistan to a comeback 2-1 Test series win over England in October.
During that series, however, the former Australian speedster expressed displeasure at not being involved in the team selection process.

During Pakistan’s Test series against England in October, Jason Gillespie spoke to Sky Sports about the PCB’s change in team selection.
“No, I’m not (a selector). That’s not what I signed up for, I’ll be honest,” Gillespie said. Sky Sports. “But this is one of those situations where you just have to go with the flow.
“I’m in a different environment and things are done differently, you can agree or disagree with how they’re done.
“At the end of the day, I’m here to help the Pakistan team perform better and improve, so that’s where I put my focus and energy.”

There was said to be limited communication between Gillespie and the PCB since the conclusion of Pakistan’s white-ball tour of Australia last month.
Amid growing uncertainty over Gillespie’s future, the PCB issued a statement in November denying his job was under immediate threat before confirming his resignation on 12 December.
