Gout breaks Australian 200m record that has stood for 56 years
The gouty 16-year-old ran the 200m in 20.04 seconds at the Australian Schools Championships on Saturday, breaking the national record held by Peter Norman since the 1968 Olympics.
His run was initially clocked at 20.07 seconds, but was later revised to 20.04 seconds, which fell short of Norman’s 20.06 seconds, which earned him the silver medal.
This makes Gaut the fastest 16-year-old ever.
“It’s pretty crazy,” Gaut told Reuters.
“I can’t process it now, but I guess I’ll think about it tonight when I go to bed. And me, I’m just a kid, and I’m running them down.”
“I was chasing that record, but I didn’t think it would come this year. I thought it would come next year, next year.”
Gut is also the fourth fastest time by an Australian in the 100m with 10.04 seconds despite the strong wind.
Gaut is now focused on breaking the 10-second barrier in the 100m and the 20-second barrier in the 200m.
He will also be focused on the 2032 Olympics in Brisbane, when he will turn 24 on the very road where he grew up.
“I’ve always done what I said I was going to do,” Gautt added on Saturday.
