The Captain’s Challenge will be introduced to the Super League from 2025, starting from the first round of February.
The move to introduce the Captain’s Challenge was one of four law changes made by the RFL on Tuesday to allow captains to refer on the pitch in all televised games, including the Betfred Challenge Cup and the Women’s Super League and Challenge Cup range of decisions to the videographer.
But captains must use their challenge wisely as each team will only be allowed one failed challenge per game.
The senior has 10 seconds from the time the referee decides to challenge it. It can only be used when the whistle blows and the game is stopped.
There are also situations where the law cannot be applied. rolling the ball; discretionary penalties (10 meters/marker for offside, speed-of-play fouls, when touching or after entering the goal) penalty mark; waste of time; dissent; deliberate progress; scrum penalties.
The RFL Board has also approved a change to the head contact recommendations, meaning the head contact regulations will remain as they were in 2024.
This follows a “significant reduction in shocking and subversive incidents in Super League by 2024, measured by the widespread use of mouthguards”.
This means that fights below shoulder height will still be allowed, rather than the change that was supposed to happen to below armpit height.
The other three laws introduced deal with the use of the green card for injured players, offside kick chasers and encouraging creativity in passing.
Green cards can now be used for both attacking players and defenders, referees can now distinguish between active and passive offside players behind tackles, and sending off will have two options.
If a team kicks for a 10-metre lead, the game is restarted with the ball 10 meters away from the pitch, not a penalty kick from the center of the 10-metre line.
If a team leaves the 20-metre field and it goes completely over the touchline or kicks from 20m so that it cannot go at least 10m further in the field, play is restarted with the ball from the center of the 20m line, not the 20m penalty kick from the center of the goal line.
