Boris Johnson says President-elect Donald Trump was “quite tough” on Vladimir Putin the last time he was in the Oval Office. But this time, his longtime political ally is worried that freedom and democracy are at greater risk globally: the former UK prime minister said Trump has advisers who have been whispering in the Russian dictator’s ear.
Speaking at Fortune’s Global Forum conference on Monday, Johnson warned that the Republican party has “a weird homoerotic fascination with Putin that I personally don’t share.”
“Some of these people think he’s totally a stand-up guy and they love his Christianity,” he said. “It’s complete nonsense. He’s a tyrant and a kleptocrat and a murderer and very, very dangerous and evil.”
“But there’s no question that some of these people are in the ear of the 47th president, and they’re telling him a lot of absolute nonsense.”
British politicians accused Prime Minister Viktor Orban of doing the same. “There’s a lot of dangerous, poisonous, harmful debate going on right now,” Johnson added. “I hope and I hope and I hope that this argument will not succeed, and I hope that the argument for democracy and freedom will succeed, and I base my optimism on what I saw last time.”
