Four police officers have been shot in succession after responding to a call inside a home in San Antonio, Texas, police said.

The incident happened late Wednesday when police officers received a call from an apartment in San Antonio, Texas, from someone reporting that a relative was in distress and needed immediate help, authorities said.

However, as police responded to the scene, one after another was shot in quick succession, according to San Antonio Police Chief Bill McManus.

The first officer who responded was shot in the lower extremities and the second officer was shot a short time later, police said.

Police confirmed that a third officer who responded arrived at the scene and before the last officer could respond he was shot and struck in the upper torso by a bullet.

The four officers were immediately taken to the hospital where they are being treated for non-life-threatening injuries, authorities said.

The identities of the officers involved have not yet been released, but McManus said each of them had between four and eight years of experience on the force.

The suspect — a 40-year-old man — has not yet been identified, but police say they are working with a SWAT team to try to get that person out of the home.

The situation continues today.
