Brazil’s President Lula ‘well’ after surgery for brain bleed

Doctors said they performed a craniotomy on the president, a procedure in which part of the bone is surgically removed from the skull to treat bleeding and relieve pressure. The bone is then replaced.

Lula is being monitored in the intensive care unit and is doing “well,” the hospital added in a statement.

It was also said that there were no complications during the operation.

On October 19, Lula slipped in a bathroom at the Alvarado Palace and hit the back of his head.

He received five stitches and, on the recommendation of doctors, canceled his planned trip to Russia for the BRIS summit.

He returned to full duties a few days later.

Lula has been in power since January 1, 2023, after narrowly edging out incumbent Jair Bolsonaro in a closely contested election.

During the election campaign, he often joked that he had “the energy of a 30-year-old.”
